Chapter 37: The Green Palace Lantern (Part 1)
Dawn was approaching from the east, and faint morning light permeated the surroundings.
Lingering around Jiang Yuebai's body were scattered remnants of spiritual stone. The thirteenth piece of spiritual stone she had attempted to carve had failed, shattering into fragments with dispersed spiritual energy. She hurriedly absorbed the spiritual energy into her body, not daring to waste even a fraction.
Jiang Yuebai's heart ached like a flesh wound.
The only thing that could console her was the absorption of the dispersed spiritual energy, which would enhance her cultivation. In the center of her Sea of Consciousness, the tender sprout was about to grow its fourth leaf, symbolizing the growth of her consciousness.
"This effect is several times better than the Star Cultivation Technique, but it consumes so many spiritual stones..."
Jiang Yuebai lay on a low table, yearning for a spiritual mine of her own.
"No wonder it's said that if you have no money, you shouldn't dabble in puppetry. It's also no wonder that Mo Baichun would set up a stall in the market to deceive children into giving him their spiritual stones."
After a moment of frustration, Jiang Yuebai regained her composure. Seeing that Lu Nanzhi and Xie Jingshan were still asleep, she quietly left and ventured deeper into the Yin Wind Gorge.
The gorge between the two mountains was over three zhang(6.66 m) wide, dark and deep, and the ceaseless howling of the Yin Wind made it terrifying.
Jiang Yuebai circled around, searching for a way to reach the ten-li slope to the south of the Yin Wind Gorge. From there, she could sneak back to Huaxi Valley, where she was beginning to feel hungry.
"There are so many ghost lights on the ten-li slope, but why is there not a single one here? How am I supposed to practice 'Three Strikes of the Severed Waters' without them?"
After searching in vain, Jiang Yuebai had no choice but to sit on a rocky outcrop and take out a white jade xun (a traditional Chinese wind instrument). She referred to "Chaotic Soul Record" and began to practice playing it. This was a way for her to relax and cultivate her temperament.
【You have started learning "Chaotic Soul Record." The music is discordant, the tune is off, and there is no talent at all. Miss, could you please stop playing?】
Jiang Yuebai ignored the warning from the cultivation panel and enjoyed herself.
Suddenly, the Yin Wind attacked, and three phosphorescent lights appeared out of nowhere, rushing toward Jiang Yuebai from the side.
Caught off guard, she dodged in a panic, and her white jade xun fell into a clump of dry grass. The three flowing lights charged at the xun, repeatedly colliding with it in a fit of anger.
Unfortunately, they had no physical form and couldn't damage the xun in the slightest.
After a moment, the three phosphorescent lights calmed down, transforming into the shape of lanterns. Jiang Yuebai's eyes lit up as she noticed that these lights were different from ordinary ghost lights.
Ordinary ghost lights had a vague lantern shape, but the green palace lanterns surrounding them were extremely lifelike and exquisite.
Two balls of phosphorescence surrounded them, emitting a faint green light. It seemed like there were also two lines of text on the lantern?
Ding!
The sabre leaves its sheath, silver radiance gleams.
The green palace lantern suddenly went crazy and turned to charge at Jiang Yuebai.
Jiang Yuebai unsheathed her sabre, and silver radiance flashed.
The green palace lantern trembled and turned to flee.
"Stay put! Don't run!"
Jiang Yuebai chased after it, and the green palace lantern, as fast as a shooting star, slapped her in the face with a gust of wind. She slapped a Gale Talisman, killed two lackeys, and forced the green palace lantern against the mountain wall, leaving it with no retreat.
The green palace lantern was trembling, and Jiang Yuebai approached it step by step, gradually making out the small words on the lantern.
"The moon rises, startling the mountain birds, they chirp by the spring brook."
Suddenly, the green palace lantern went mad and rushed toward Jiang Yuebai.
Jiang Yuebai drew his sabre, and a silver glow burst forth. The green light collided with her body.
"I've seen so much blood that I hate the color red the most. Today, on the first day of the lunar year, I'll make you into a green lantern."
A woman's voice suddenly appeared in her mind, lingering in her ears.
Jiang Yuebai quickly checked her body, but there were no abnormalities. Could it be that there was a remnant soul in this lantern, which explained its unique appearance and the parting words it left before it died?
Crash!
The mountain wall shattered, revealing a narrow gap.
Jiang Yuebai approached and found that the wall was very thin, most likely shattered by her sabre's radiance.
Inside was a bone-chilling cold, and it seemed to be another world, winding and twisting without end. There were many ghost lights emitting a faint green glow.
"Did I stumble into the lair of the ghost lights?"
Jiang Yuebai was visibly excited. Heading south in this direction might lead her straight to the ten-li slope.
"Jiang Yuebai—"
Hearing Xie Jingshan's call, Jiang Yuebai reluctantly looked back at the hole, took one last longing glance, and then turned back.
