Chapter 38: Defiance (Part 3)

Beside the campfire, Xie Jingshan grumbled while grilling meat. Jiang Yuebai cleaned her clothes and hair, letting Lu Nanzhi help her tie her hair.

Despite being punished, Jiang Yuebai was very happy. Among the three of them, Lu Nanzhi felt like an kind older sister next door, and Xie Jingshan was like her mischievous younger brother.

She was starting to miss home a bit...

"It's done, here you go." Xie Jingshan handed the grilled meat to Jiang Yuebai, a little annoyed. "You just ate and now you want more. You're such a glutton."

Lu Nanzhi raised her eyes, and Xie Jingshan felt a bit apprehensive. After all, Lu Nanzhi's Water Spirit Root overcame his Fire Spirit Root, and he couldn't beat her, especially now that he had developed a protective instinct toward Jiang Yuebai.

"Why are you cultivating as a cultivator?" Jiang Yuebai asked, biting into her meat.

Xie Jingshan sat down, looked at the sky, and sighed. "I made a bet with my dad. I promised him that I would always be ahead of everyone else and never fall behind. I want to become the number one sword cultivator in the Earthly Spirit Realm in a hundred years."

"What if you can't make it?"

Xie Jingshan sounded frustrated. "If I can't make it, I'll go back home and take care of the family business."

Jiang Yuebai nodded and finished the grilled meat. After reading for a while, she yawned and felt a bit tired.

"I'm feeling a bit sleepy. I'll take a nap."

Saying this, Jiang Yuebai stuffed the book into her robe and lay down, falling into a deep sleep on Lu Nanzhi's lap.

"If you're tired too, you can rest. I'll keep watch," Lu Nanzhi said to Xie Jingshan.

Xie Jingshan was pleasantly surprised and cast a deep gaze at Jiang Yuebai.

Lu Nanzhi had always been unapproachable within the inner circle, and strangers were not allowed near her. From the moment she entered, no one had ever seen her smile.

Though she was only six years old, her demeanor was that of a sixty-year-old.

Today, everything had been shattered, and Xie Jingshan realized that Lu Nanzhi also had a childish side.

The ability to melt an icy heart—Jiang Yuebai was truly formidable. It reminded him of what his mother had taught him: In human interactions. sincerity is enough.

With Jiang Yuebai, he felt sincerity, whether directed at him or Lu Nanzhi.

Thinking back to the day when Jiang Yuebai praised him for his chivalry and sense of justice, he realized how gullible he had been. He chuckled silently and took a brief rest under a withered tree.

He dreamt, of his rapid progress in cultivation. Seeing which Lu Nanzhi grew frustrated, and Jiang Yuebai wept, saying she could never surpass him.

Xie Jingshan grinned but was suddenly awakened by a slap.

"Xie Jingshan!"

Rubbing his face, Xie Jingshan sat up and saw Lu Nanzhi looking grave.

"Come and see xiao Bai."

TL Note: xiao Bai- little bai. "小" (xiǎo) before someone's name or a nickname is a common way to express affection, intimacy, or endearment. It is often used when addressing someone who is younger or of lower status, such as a friend, family member, or someone with whom you have a close relationship. The use of "小" implies a sense of familiarity and warmth. This usage is similar to using terms like "buddy," "pal," or "dear" in English

Xie Jingshan got up and followed Lu Nanzhi. They found Jiang Yuebai with her eyes closed, swaying unsteadily towards the Yin Wind Gorge.

She seemed lost, unable to be awakened.
