Chapter 2: A Beating (Part 2)
The Bubble Ring ethereal beast was genderless and belonged to the psychic-type. It was a rare kind of ethereal beast.
In fact, psychic-type ethereal beasts like Bubble Ring were quite rare. There weren't many ethereal beast bases/farms, with perhaps only five or six new additions in variety (types) each year. Their starting prices of ethereal beasts were in the range of one million Alliance Coins, which most average families couldn't afford. Qiao Sang's mother was indeed a wealthy woman.
Qiao Sang immediately labeled the short-haired female researcher in the white coat before her as a rich woman.
The researcher, busy typing at the computer, seemed unfazed by Qiao Sang and Qiaoli Guo's arrival. She had likely received advance information about Qiao Sang's appointment.
"Please have a seat over there," she gestured towards a single couch nearby.
Qiao Sang took a seat as instructed. It was just an ordinary couch, nothing special about it.
"Bubble Ring," the short-haired researcher called her partner without looking up.
"Ring."
Suddenly, a blue light enveloped Bubble Ring. Before Qiao Sang could comprehend what was happening, a silver helmet attached to a dozen or so wires floated over from a distance of about ten meters and settled on her head.
Qiao Sang's eyes brightened at the sight.
This ability was so convenient; it was like a lazy person's dream gadget!
"Stay still," the researcher said, still engrossed in her typing. Though she hadn't lifted her head, Qiao Sang knew the command was directed at her.
The silver helmet didn't obstruct her vision and she clearly saw the researcher's expression change as she received the data and images transmitted by the device. The researcher furrowed her brows slowly.
Qiao Sang tensed up instantly.
Could there be a problem?
The researcher's face grew stern. Without any expression, she resembled a school principal, especially now, with her stern expression and current task. It made Qiao Sang's heart race.
"Did you awaken on your own?" the researcher suddenly spoke.
"Uh, sister, is there something wrong?" Qiao Sang asked nervously.
"No, don't be nervous." The researcher saw the unease in Qiao Sang's eyes. Her stern face softened slightly, though the smile looked forced.
Strangely frightening...
This made Qiao Sang even more nervous.
"Among the students in our city who awakened on their own this year, you make the sixth. You must have good grades, right?" the researcher asked.
Being a top student didn't guarantee awakening, but those who managed to awaken on their own were often excellent students.
Qiao Sang: "..."
You could say she was smart or talented, so why bring up grades?
Qiao Sang knew the researcher was trying to ease her tension, but forced conversation wasn't helpful...
"I'm basically third in my class," Qiao Sang said nonchalantly.
"Being third in the whole school is quite impressive. Many first and second place students haven't awakened," the researcher managed a stiff smile, her voice gentle.
"I was first in the recent mock exam," Qiao Sang said, no longer nervous.
"Upon awakening, the brain domain typically develops by around 2%. Someone like you who awakened on their own usually reaches around 5%. A sudden improvement is normal," the researcher explained, interpreting Qiao Sang's first-place score.
Qiao Sang: "..."
After a couple of minutes, the researcher looked up and called, "Bubble Ring."
"Ring."
Bubble Ring used its psychic power to return the device on Qiao Sang's head to its original place.
"Congratulations on a successful awakening. There are no issues with your brain domain. However, the fluctuations in your brain domain are a bit intense. You should rest well and eat more dried fruits."
The researcher took out a certificate, signed it, and stamped it before handing it over to Qiao Sang.
"Thank you."
Taking the certificate, Qiao Sang finally felt relieved.
...
...
"How did it go?" Qiao Sang's mother hurriedly approached as they stepped out of the room.
Qiao Sang sighed and handed the result to her.
Her mother turned pale upon seeing the result. She was momentarily afraid to take it from Qiao Sang's hand.
"Mom, take a look." Qiao Sang offered the certificate again.
Ye Xiangting felt a chill in her heart. No self-awakening, and on top of that, scoring zero...
In reality, even without the zero, her daughter's previous scores wouldn't have qualified her for a Beast Tamer High School. To get into such a school, one had to awaken a Beast Grimoire through magnetic wave awakening and also meet the score requirement.
The middle school entrance exam had a maximum score of 650 points. The lowest score requirement from the previous year was 332 points.
If Qiao Sang didn't make the cut despite her best efforts, it would have been fine. At least she tried her best. But not only did she score zero, she lied about it...
Ye Xiangting began to question her parenting choices.
Maybe a beating was in order.
This child needed a good scolding.
Seeing her mother accept the certificate but avoid looking at it, Qiao Sang straightened her back involuntarily.
"Smack."
Qiao Sang was dumbfounded.
