Chapter 34 - Offense (Part 2)

"Shut your mouth!"

Slap!

Tao Fengnian stood up, grabbed Jiang Yuebai, and delivered a slap.

Jiang Yuebai stood still, her innocent face turning gradually red and swollen from the imprint of five fingers. Mist blurred her eyes, and she clenched her lips tightly as tears rolled down in big drops.

Tao Fengnian's heart was torn apart, his body trembling. The hand hanging by his side was burning like hot iron.

Jia Wei sneered, "When a child doesn't listen, they need to be disciplined properly. Otherwise, they'll offend people outside, and they won't even know how they'll die."

Tao Fengnian's lips twitched, and he half shielded Jiang Yuebai with his body.

"This girl has been spoiled by me too much. Junior Jia, allow me a moment to rest. I promise to re-cultivate your twenty mu of land within three days and plant new spiritual plants."

Jiang Yuebai lifted her head suddenly, tears falling. She looked at Tao Fengnian with confusion.

Tao Fengnian didn't look at her; he only looked at Jia Wei.

Jia Wei brushed off nonexistent dirt on his clothes and grumbled, "Three days are too long. Senior, you are a spiritual farmer after all. Two days are enough. I happen to have some spiritual medicine seeds, though they are challenging to nurture. You can plant them all at once."

Tao Fengnian's back hunched, his voice heavy with weariness, "Alright, two days then, two days."

Jia Wei finally showed a satisfied expression and casually tossed a bag of spiritual medicine seeds at Tao Fengnian's feet.

Before leaving, he cast a deep look at Jiang Yuebai.

"Little girl, I heard you're Lin Suiwan's maid. You're quite eloquent. My sister is in need of a servant by her side. Would you like me to consider you?"

Jiang Yuebai stared back fearlessly, but Tao Fengnian shielded her and pleaded with a trembling voice.

"This girl has a contract with me, and it's registered within the sect. Until her apprenticeship is complete, it might not be convenient to move her."

Jia Wei smiled faintly, a hidden implication in his words.

"That's a pity. However, I'm afraid this contract of yours won't last until her apprenticeship is complete."

With that, Jia Wei left triumphantly. Tao Fengnian slumped to the ground, coughing severely.

"Grandfather!" Jiang Yuebai rushed to check on Tao Fengnian's condition.

"Yatou, you shouldn't have spoken so much just now. Jia Wei is a wicked person. Why did you provoke him?"

Jiang Yuebai protested, "So should we let him bully you freely? To reclaim the twenty mu of land within two days, he's clearly endangering your life!"

Tao Fengnian smiled bitterly, his gaze pained. Seeing the handprint on Jiang Yuebai's face, he shivered, "Good girl, did I hurt you too much with that slap?"

Jiang Yuebai shook her head, "Grandfather, let's go talk to Senior Hong and explain the situation. There must be a solution. By letting Jia Wei continue like this, he won't stop."

"You don't understand. You're still young, you don't understand... cough, cough."

Tao Fengnian shook his head repeatedly. Jiang Yuebai felt frustrated, unable to fathom what her grandfather was truly afraid of. Back then, he had single-handedly defeated two wolves, his bravery unparalleled. So why couldn't he deal with a Qi Refining 9th Layer disciple like Jia Wei?

Unable to persuade Tao Fengnian, Jiang Yuebai saw him insist on going out after resting for a while. She reluctantly followed, wishing to help him even a little.

For two consecutive days, the two of them toiled in the fields. Jiang Yuebai remained silent, her emotions pent up, as she focused on her work.

Once all the medicinal herbs were planted, they returned to the courtyard. Just as Tao Fengnian was about to apologize to Jiang Yuebai, she silently packed her belongings and left.

"Do you want to go to the Hall of Dharma? Grandfather can take you there."

"No need, grandfather. Please rest."

Jiang Yuebai left without looking back, leaving Tao Fengnian sitting in the courtyard, smoking his pipe, with a sense of loneliness.

He wasn't helpless; he just didn't want to gamble with his life. He wanted to live.

As the sun set and the moon rose, Tao Fengnian waited for Jiang Yuebai to return but didn't see her. He paced back and forth between the courtyard and the valley entrance, growing increasingly anxious about the girl who should have returned by now.

Suddenly, his expression changed drastically.
